Inp.polri.go.id - Pekanbaru. In an operation led by the Pekanbaru City Sub-regional Police in Riau Province, 59 Rohingya men were rescued from a residence on Cipta Karta Street in Tuah Madani District suspected to be a hub where brokers housed them.
"It's an illegal shelter. We found 59 Rohingya men," said Assistant Superintendent Bery Juana Putra, the Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit at the Pekanbaru Police on Wednesday (6/3/3034).
Language barriers posed a challenge in gathering information from the Rohingya men during the early morning operation on Monday. Authorities plan to collaborate with language experts for assistance, antaranews.com reported.
In addition to the Rohingya men, three Indonesian citizens were detained on suspicion of being involved, in smuggling operations for the Rohingyas.
"We're currently investigating the role of these three Indonesians," Chief Bery said.
This operation followed a previous incident where the Bukit Raya Police Sector in Pekanbaru detained 14 Rohingya refugees. They were found stranded on Tengku Bey Street in Simpang Tiga Village, Bukit Raya District, on 21 February 2024.
Most of the refugees, primarily minors, were taken into custody after residents expressed concern about their welfare while they were left on the roadside.
