inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Indonesian National Police (INP) urges the public to express their opinions peacefully and responsibly, while also responding wisely to information circulating on social media. Freedom of expression is an essential part of democracy and must be respected, while still considering the rights of others and public order.
The Head of the Public Relations Division of INP, Inspector General Johnny Eddizon Isir, stated that the right to express opinions in public is guaranteed by Law Number 9 of 1998 concerning Freedom of Expression in Public. However, its implementation also carries with it the obligation to respect the rights and freedoms of others, obey the law, and maintain public order.
"We respect the public's right to express criticism and aspirations. We urge the public to exercise this right wisely and responsibly. Differences of opinion are part of democracy and can be expressed firmly without disregarding the rights of others or public order," Johnny said in a statement in Jakarta, Tuesday (10/27/2026).
He also reminded the public to be more careful when receiving and sharing information in the digital space. Incomplete information, video clips without context, or unverified narratives have the potential to cause misunderstandings if immediately believed and disseminated.
According to him, the public needs to get used to checking information sources, understanding the context, and referring to trusted sources before drawing conclusions. Social media should be a space for exchanging ideas and conveying constructive criticism, not a means of spreading provocation.
"Ensure the information we receive is accurate before sharing it. Let's use social media responsibly, remain critical, and resist being easily provoked. Maintaining a healthy digital space is part of our shared responsibility," he explained.
The police urges all elements of society to continue maintaining an open, peaceful, and respectful democratic space. By understanding the rights and obligations to express opinions and wisely using social media, the public can contribute to maintaining unity and creating a safe and conducive community life.
