The eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau, which occurred in early September 2026, resulted in the distribution of volcanic ash across several areas. Very small ash particles can be inhaled and penetrate further into the respiratory tract and reach the lungs.

A Pulmonary and Respiratory Specialist from the Academic Hospital of Gadjah Mada University explained that exposure to volcanic ash can cause a number of symptoms, such as coughing, throat irritation, nasal congestion or runny nose, increased phlegm, shortness of breath, and wheezing.

In addition to irritating the respiratory tract, volcanic ash can also irritate the eyes and contaminate food and water sources. Therefore, people in affected areas are advised to reduce outdoor activities and wear masks that filter particles when outside.

People are also advised to close doors, windows, and vents to reduce the ingress of ash. Food and water sources should be covered to prevent contamination. After outdoor activities, people should immediately wash their bodies and change clothes.
