Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta.  Raja Ampat Sub-regional Police have initiated questioning of eight crew members from The Oceanik to determine the cause of a fire that erupted onboard the tourist boat while navigating the waters of Aborek, Raja Ampat, Southwest Papua. Superintendent Edwin Parsaoran, the Chief of Raja Ampat Police, disclosed that, as per the ship's captain, the fire began in the engine room, antaranews.com reported. "The fire ignited while one of The Oceanik's crew members was refueling in the engine room, leading to a spark," he stated on Saturday (2/3/2024). Chief Edwin said that no comprehensive investigation has been conducted yet, with the focus currently on providing trauma support to the ten foreign tourists and five local tourists who were aboard. The Raja Ampat Water Police reported that 15 tourists have been safely evacuated to Sorong City, while the eight crew members remain in Waisai for questioning regarding the boat fire. Meanwhile, Amirudin AS, the Head of the Sorong Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), assured that they are prepared to respond to any maritime emergencies. (mg/inp/pr/nm)
