Inp.polri.go.id - Jayapura. A joint task force of the military and police officers has evacuated 198 people from the Kali Musairo gold mining area in Nabire, Central Papua, following a deadly insurgent raid.
The group includes traditional miners and employees of PT Kristalin, among whom are 26 Chinese citizens who had been trapped at the site since the Aibon Kogoya-led Armed Criminal Group (KKB) attacked a security post on Saturday.
"The evacuation was prioritized to prevent further casualties following the assault that left two people dead," said Nabire Sub-regional Police Chief Superintendent Samuel Tatiratu on Sunday (22/2/2026), as cited by antaranews.com.
The 26 foreigners were transported to the Makimi Police Office before being transported to the company’s dormitory in Sriwini, Nabire. While the primary extraction is complete, the Damai Cartenz Task Force is scheduled to sweep the Kilometer 40 to 50 areas on Monday to locate any remaining traditional miners.
Security forces remain on high alert across the Legari district as operations continue to secure the perimeter and neutralize the threat posed by the KKB rebels.
