inp.polri.go.id – Jakarta. The Directorate of Cybercrime (Dittipidsiber) of the Criminal Investigation Agency (Bareskrim) of the Indonesian National Police (Polri) revealed that there are several applications on the PlayStore including the call to prayer and prayer applications that steal the user’s data. The Ministry of Communication and Information has also stepped in in solving this case. Spokesperson for the Ministry of Communication and Information, Dedy Permadi, revealed that his party was studying allegations of unauthorized processing of personal data by several applications on the Google Play Store. "Further coordination with the Polda Metro Jaya will be carried out regarding the next steps and efforts to be taken under the applicable regulations," he explained, Thursday (21/4/2022). Dedy Permadi added that Google has taken action against applications that are suspected of stealing the user’s data without rights. "The application is required to remove the user data retrieval feature, if it wants to be accessible again by users on the Google Play Store," he explained. Previously, Dittipidsiber Bareskrim Polri warned the public about that application that had been downloaded by 10 million users. "Be aware of the personal data theft under the guise of prayer and call to prayer applications. These applications have been widely downloaded on the Play Store," wrote the @CCICPolri account. In its upload, Cyber Police said the application collects sensitive user data. The data can potentially be misused by irresponsible individual. "An analysis reports about a series of applications available on the Google Play Store, which collect sensitive user data. That application has been downloaded more than 45 million people," explained Cyber Police. "The data of these users has significant potential to be misused as a result of poor server/database security," they added. The application reportedly stole data through third-party software development (SDK). This includes the capability to capture clipboard content, GPS data, email address and MAC address of the user's modem router as well as the network SSID.
