Three Suspects Arrested in Murder of Papuan Women's Rights Activist

In the latest development, the Task Force for Law Enforcement and Security  of Damai Cartenz Operation Task Force 2023 has arrested three suspects believed to be responsible for the murder of women's rights activist Michelle Kurisi Doga. The murder, described as "savage and cruel" by Chief of Operation of the Damai Cartenz Operation Task Force Senior Superintendent Dr. Faizal Ramadhani, has shocked the nation and raised concerns about the safety of women activists in Papua. "On Thursday, October 5, 2023, we arrested one suspect with the initials PM in Jayawijaya. The following day, we conducted further investigations and arrested another suspect, identified as AW, in Jayapura, and RK, alias RM, in Tolikara. We estimate the involvement of a total of seven individuals," he said. The spokesperson of the Damai Cartenz  Operation Task Force, Superintendent Dr. Bayu Suseno added that the three other men, identified only by their initials KW, JW , DW, and K, have been put on the wanted list. "These seven suspected perpetrators are believed to be active members of the West Papua National Committee (KNPB) who actively spread negative propaganda about Papua on social media," he said. The three detained suspects have been in custody at the Papua Regional Police Headquarters. Michelle, a vocal advocate for women's rights in Papua who frequently appeared on live YouTube discussions addressing various Papua-related issues, was murdered in the Koloak Atas District of Lanny Jaya Regency.on August 28, 2023. The perpetrators recorded the murder and shared the video on Facebook. The video went viral on social media platforms, sparking widespread outrage. (mg/inp/pr/nm)
