Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Agency of Research and Development of Geological Disaster Technology (BPPTKG) has recorded a significant volcanic activity at Mount Merapi, located in Central Java and Yogyakarta, with lava flows reaching a maximum distance of 1.8 kilometers. According to Suraji, an official at the Mount Merapi Observation Post, the volcanic activity occurred  between 6 to 12 PM on Sunday (8/10/2023). "During this period, we observed a total of 20 lava flows towards Bebeng River, with a maximum distance of 1,800 meters," Suraji said in his statement as reported by antaranews.com In the span of six hours, BPPTKG recorded 30 eruption earthquakes with amplitudes ranging from 3 to 14 millimeters and durations lasting from 35.64 to 197.24 seconds. Additionally, there were 30 hybrid earthquakes, or earthquakes with multiple phases, with amplitudes of 3 to 10 millimeters, no observable S-P waves, and durations of 4.4 to 9.32 seconds. Since January 1, 2023, until October 9, 2023, Mount Merapi has erupted 28 times. The potential hazards from this volcanic activity include lava flows and pyroclastic clouds in the southern-southwestern sector, extending up to a maximum of five kilometers from the summit, encompassing areas such as Boyong River. In the southeastern sector, potential hazards extend to a maximum of five kilometers, including areas like Woro River and Gendol River. Moreover, volcanic material ejected during an explosive eruption could reach a radius of three kilometers from the peak of Mount Merapi. BPPTKG has urged the local residents to refrain from any activities within the danger zones. They are advised to prepare for disruptions caused by volcanic ash and to be vigilant regarding the potential hazards of lahars, especially during rainy periods around the volcano. Mount Merapi, one of the most active volcanoes on earth, has maintained a Level III alert status since November 2020. (mg/inp/pr/nm)
