Tiger Owner Declared Suspect in Keeper's Fatal Mauling

Inp.polri.go.id - Samarinda.  Samarinda Sub-Regional Police have officially named the owner of the Sumatran tiger responsible for the fatal mauling of keeper Suprianda as a suspect. The  27-year-old victim lost his life in the tiger attack while cleaning the enclosure at around 10 am on Saturday, 18 November 2023. Samarinda Police Chief, Senior Superintendent Ary Fadli said that investigations revealed that the tiger owner kept the animal as a hobby and had collected several protected species. "Based on the information gathered and the owner's statement, it appears that the tiger was kept as a hobby. We also found a leopard during the search, and we have worked with the local conservation agency  to relocate it to a conservation centre in Tabang," he told a press conference on Thursday (23/11/2023). The owner, identified as a 41-year old resident of Samarinda , bought the rare animal from someone in Jakarta for Rp 100 million, transported it to Samarinda in a passenger car and then shipped it by sea when it was about a month old. The charges include multiple violations, namely Article 21 paragraph 2 of Law No. 5/1990 on the Conservation of Biological Resources and Ecosystems for possessing protected wildlife without a permit. In addition, Article 359 of the Criminal Code  is being applied for negligence resulting in the death of a person. (mg/rd/hn/nm)
