Inp.polri.go.id - Banda Aceh. In response to opposition from the local community, the municipal administration and members of the Regional Leadership Communication Forum (Forkopimda) of Sabang, Banda Aceh, have formally requested the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to relocate Rohingya refugees from Sabang to alternative shelter locations.
Ady Akmal Shiddiq, Head of Protocol and Communication at the Sabang Secretariat, disclosed on Tuesday (5/12/2023) that the Forkopimda of Sabang has conducted extensive coordination meetings regarding the handling of the Rohingya refugee situation.
"After 5 hours of intense discussions, Forkopimda Sabang has concluded by formally requesting UNHCR to relocate the Rohingya refugees outside Sabang City," he was quoted by antaranews.com as saying.
The decision was prompted by the strong opposition from the entire Sabang community following the arrival of the second wave of Rohingya refugees, numbering 139 individuals, in Sabang City on 1 December 2023.
"This is evident as the refugees have been relocated from one village to another several times, yet it continues to elicit the same level of opposition," he remarked, adding that UNHCR has acknowledged ongoing coordination regarding the relocation of the refugees.
