Inp.polri.go.id - Tanjungpinang. The authorities have arrested  the captain of the vessel KG 932, a Vietnamese national, on charges of illegal fishing in the North Natuna waters. The Indonesian National Police (INP) investigators have officially named Nguyen Hoang Giau as a suspect in the case of illegal fishing with the intention of selling the illegally caught fish in Vietnam. According to Senior Superintendent Dadan, the INP Security Maintenance Agency's Head of the Sub-Directorate of  Water andAir Patrol, Directorate of Water and Air Police, the arrest involved a chase, although no firearms were used in the confrontation. Further investigation revealed that the Vietnamese flagged vessel was fishing in the North Natuna waters without the required documentation required by Indonesian regulations. "During the inspection, a makeshift revolver was found in the captain's possession. In addition, the vessel lacked proper documentation, which are required for fishing in Indonesian waters", Chief Dadan said on Sunday (3/12/2023). The estimated loss to the nation from the activities of this 55-tonne vessel over the past decade is a staggering Rp 264 billion. Beyond the economic impact, local Indonesian fishermen are also adversely affected by such incursions. The authorities have seized the vessel along with a pear trawl, one tonne of mixed fish, a makeshift firearm and six bullets. (mg/as/pr/nm)
