Inp.polri.go.id - Bukittinggi. In response to the volcanic eruption of Mount Marapi on Sunday (3/12/2023) afternoon, the Bukittinggi mayoralty in West Sumatra has issued a advisory for residents to stay indoors.
The eruption resulted in the release of ash and rocks, prompting authorities to launch clean-up operations in affected areas, including the iconic Jam Gadang site, antaranews.com reported.
"We are temporarily advising residents not to leave their homes. BPBD personnel and others are working to clean up the ash fallout from the Mount Marapi eruption, including the Jam Gadang area," said Mayor Erman Safar in a press conference, referring to the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency in Bukittinggi.
He urged citizens to follow instructions from the administration and relevant authorities in response to the volcanic event. There was no casualty reported up to Sunday evening.
"There have been several eruptions today. We ask our residents not to panic. Stay calm and stay indoors. If you are outside, take shelter and use masks, handkerchiefs or clothes to cover your mouth and nose from the volcanic ash," Mayor Erman advised.

The most recent eruption of Mount Marapi took place on 20 February 2023, when volcanic ash reached a height of 3 kilometres from the summit of the mountain.
