Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Jakarta administration extended weather modification operations on Sunday (18/1/2026) by dispersing salt-based materials over the Sunda Strait through Tangerang to reduce rainfall risks in the capital and surrounding areas.
“This operation is aimed at weakening rain clouds before they reach Jakarta by shifting precipitation toward designated areas over the sea,” said Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) chief Isnawa Adji, as cited by antaranews.com.
The operation, carried out on its third day, involved three CASA aircraft sorties from Halim Perdanakusuma Airport using sodium chloride (NaCl) and calcium oxide (CaO). Seeding targeted cloud systems over the Sunda Strait, Serang, and Tangerang to lower rainfall intensity amid ongoing extreme weather.
The initiative was conducted by BPBD Jakarta in coordination with the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the Indonesian Air Force, and PT Rekayasa Atmosphere Indonesia. Authorities warned that moderate to heavy rain remains possible, particularly during the afternoon and evening.
Officials urged residents to stay alert and monitor official emergency channels for updates as mitigation efforts continue.
