Inp.polri.go.id - Garut.   West Java Regional Police Chief Inspector General Rudi Setiawan conducted an on-site investigation early Saturday (19/7/2025) at the scene of a deadly crowd surge during a public feast held at the Garut Regent’s Hall.

The festivities were part of a wedding celebration involving the son of West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi, Maulana Akbar Ahmad Habibie, and Garut Deputy Regent  Putri Kalina, who is the daughter of Jakarta Metro Jaya Regional Police Inspector General Karyoto.

Three people died in the incident, including an 8-year-old child and a police officer, while 26 others were hospitalized after a stampede broke out near the venue’s main gate during a mass food distribution on Friday night.

“All protocols were followed, including security assessments and personnel deployment,” said Chief Rudi. “We are now conducting a deeper investigation to determine if negligence occurred and who is responsible.”

Authorities confirmed that the crowd’s enthusiasm overwhelmed organizers and led to the chaos. Garut’s local administration has pledged to cover medical expenses and provide compensation to victims' families, according to antaranews.com
