Wildfires Mostly Occurred in Sumatra: BNPB

Inp.polri.go.id – Jakarta. National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB) records the wildfire mostly occurred in Sumatran provinces. According to the Head of Data, Information, and Communication Center of BNPB, Abdul Muhari, wildfires are found in Bener Meriah Regency (Aceh), Asahan (North Sumatra), and Dumai City (Riau). “We have detected it since March 12nd, 2024, and luckily we are able to extinguish it,” said Abdul on Wednesday (3/20/2024). Abdul adds that it proves the phenomenon of Madden Julian Osciliation (MJO) atmosphere is leaving the Sumatran Island. The phenomenon caused the weather in Sumatra to change drastically which caused the rain intensity and landslides rocketed. “So, the focus of our mitigation effort is to prevent the wildfires from spreading,” says Abdul. Moreover, all regional heads are implored to be responsive in handling the shift in weather. According to Abdul, the initiative is important so that the mitigation effort and emergency handling could went optimally. One of the mitigation efforts carried out by personnel is wetting the land in mineral field. “So that those field would not be easily ignited due to hot weather,” says Abdul. (ad/ndt/pr/nm)
