Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Attorney General’s Office (AGO) confirmed on Thursday (26/6/2025) that a new wiretapping agreement with major telecom providers is solely for law enforcement purposes, not mass surveillance.
“This is purely within the context of law enforcement. We need functions that support our legal work, and that requires cooperation,” said AGO spokesperson Harli Siregar, as quoted by antaranews.com.
The AGO’s Intelligence Division signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with four major operators—PT Telkom, PT Telkomsel, PT Indosat Tbk, and PT XL Smart Telecom Tbk—to support lawful interception and data exchange. The move is anchored in Article 31 paragraph 3 of the Electronic Information and Transactions Law, which permits wiretaps for legal purposes by police or prosecutors.
Harli emphasized that public privacy will not be compromised. The system will aid in locating fugitives, gathering legal evidence, and conducting intelligence analysis.
Deputy Attorney General for Intelligence Reda Manthovani noted the agreement enhances access to quality intelligence data, vital for tracking wanted persons and informing broader national-level investigations.
