inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Minister of Primary and Secondary Education (Mendikdasmen) Abdul Mu'ti said that Artificial Intelligence (AI) and "coding" subjects will be taught starting from grade 4 of elementary school.

"In the elementary school obviously we will not start the subject from grade 1, but later at grade 4, grade 5, or grade 6," said Minister Abdul on Wednesday (11/13/2024).

However, the subject of AI and coding only acts as an optional subject. 

"Not a mandatory subject," said the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education.

According to the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, the idea of ​​the new subject is not new because a number of elementary schools in Indonesia have already taught their students of the subjects.

"It turns out that several elementary schools in Jakarta, even in Aceh, have developed coding subjects for elementary schools," said the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education.

Regarding the need for teaching staff, the Minister Abdul may have to recruit new staff or simply collaborate with institutions that have been conducting training related to AI and coding.

According to him, the format related to the recruitment of new subject teachers will still be discussed, including the possibility of training the graduates of Elementary School Teacher Education (PGSD).

Previously, Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka had instructed the Ministry of Elementary and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen) to implement AI and coding subjects at the elementary and junior high school levels.
