Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra confirmed that the transfer of the remaining Bali Nine drug convicts to Australia hinges on a reciprocal agreement.

Following a meeting with Australian Minister for Home Affairs Tony Burke in Jakarta on Tuesday (3/12/2024), hel emphasized that Indonesia expects Australia to reciprocate by returning Indonesian prisoners if requested in the future.

“This is not an exchange but a transfer of prisoners under reciprocal terms. No simultaneous exchange of prisoners will occur,” Yusril clarified, as reported by antaranews.com.

The transfer, proposed by Australia, stems from a goodwill gesture by President Prabowo Subianto, who exercised discretion to facilitate the request. The Indonesian government has submitted a draft agreement outlining the conditions, which Australia is currently reviewing.

If approved promptly, the transfer could be completed this December.

The Bali Nine were convicted in 2005 for attempting to smuggle 8.2 kilograms of heroin from Indonesia to Australia. Of the original nine convicts, five remain imprisoned in Indonesia. The others have been executed, released, or died in custody.
