Inp.polri.go.id - Magelang. A stair lift has been installed at Borobudur Temple without using nails or drills to preserve the site’s ancient stone structure, InJourney CEO Maya Watono said on Tuesday (27/5/2025).
“We’ve coordinated closely with the Ministry of Culture to ensure compliance with UNESCO standards,” she said, as quoted by antaranews.com.
The portable lift enables elderly visitors and religious pilgrims, including senior Buddhist monks, to access the top of the temple, which was previously inaccessible to them.
“Worship should not be limited by physical barriers. We must facilitate spiritual access,” Maya added.
The installation is in line with InJourney’s four pillars: inclusivity, spirituality and culture, sustainability, and education. Maya noted that similar accessibility upgrades are common at other global heritage sites.
With nearly 500 million Buddhists worldwide, Maya said attracting even one percent of Asian Buddhists—about 3 million visitors—could bring significant tourism revenue, benefiting local economies in Magelang, Central Java, and Indonesia more broadly.
