Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta.  The Constitutional Court ruled on Thursday (26/6/2025) that national and regional elections must be held separately, with a gap of two to two and a half years between them.

The ruling follows a petition by election watchdog Perludem, seeking clarity in election scheduling for improved governance and public participation, as reported by antaranews.com..

Under the new interpretation, national elections of House of Representatives (DPR), Regional Representatives Council (DP and president/vice president will be held first, followed by regional elections (local and regional legislative councils, governors, mayors, and regents) at least two years later, but no later than two years and six months after national officials are inaugurated.

The Court declared that provisions in the Election Law and Pilkada Law contradict the 1945 Constitution unless understood with the new timeline.

This decision ends the practice of holding simultaneous national and regional elections, which previously burdened election organizers and diluted voter focus.

The ruling mandates lawmakers and the electoral commission to realign future election calendars accordingly.
