The Head of the Aceh Regional Office for Corrections, Yan Rusmanto, said that officials are in the process of verifying the exact number of escaped prisoners.

"I'm unable to confirm the exact number at this time. Prison staff are currently conducting a headcount. We will provide further details, including the cause of the escape, once available," he said

Reports indicate the prisoners fled just before iftar (breaking the fast), with some escaping through the main gate, while others climbed over the prison roof.

Locals outside the prison panicked upon witnessing the mass escape, with some capturing the incident on their mobile phones, as reported by antaranews.com.

Authorities are currently conducting a search operation to recapture the fugitives.
