Suroan and Suran Agung are Javanese traditions marking the month of Suro. Suroan includes spiritual rituals like prayers and pilgrimages, while Suran Agung is a large martial arts event by martial arts schools, featuring performances and gatherings to honor cultural values and strengthen unity.
Inp.polri.go.id - Surabaya. The East Java Regional Police have called on all pesilat (martial artists) in the region to help maintain peace and public safety during the Suroan and Suran Agung events, scheduled from late June to early July 2025.
“We ask all pencak silat martial artists in East Java to uphold the Safe Suro commitment we agreed upon together,” said Senior Superintendent Jules Abraham Abast, the East Java Police Head of Public Relations, on Wednesday (25/6/2025), as quoted by antaranews.com.
To secure the events, authorities have mobilized 21,501 officers under Operation Safe Suro 2025.
The operation will cover activities such as promotion ceremonies (sahsahan) and large gatherings. Police warned they will take firm action against any group or individual causing disruption.
Security posts will be set up in high-risk areas. Chief Jules emphasized that the police will not tolerate acts of violence, including mob justice, during the celebrations, which historically have seen tensions between rival silat groups.
