Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed the death of an Indonesian citizen in Cambodia, allegedly resulting from violence by a group of fellow Indonesians working in an online gambling company.
Judha Nugraha, the Director of Citizen Protection and BHI at the ministry, said in a press conference on Friday (4/10/2024) that a citizen identified as RAH, aged 30, died on 23 September2024, in Poipet, Cambodia.
His death was reportedly caused by violence from 22 other Indonesians, including two women, who are now in custody. RVictim AH was allegedly beaten after being accused of stealing 22,000 baht, though it remains unclear if this money belonged to his employer, according to antaranews.com.
Judha confirmed that the embassy is communicating with Cambodian authorities to gain consular access to the 22 detained Indonesians and ensure they receive fair treatment under local law.
The company that employed RAH has agreed to assist in repatriating his remains, which are currently in Cambodia.
Judha added that RAH and the others were working for an online gambling company, which is legal in Cambodia.
He urged Indonesians to adhere to legal work procedures abroad and to report their presence to Indonesian representative offices. He noted that over 80,000 Indonesians hold residency permits in Cambodia, but only 17,000 have registered with the embassy.
