Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The National Energy Council (DEN) has backed Russian state-owned Rosatom's investment in a nuclear power plant in Southeast Sulawesi.
Musri Mawaledha, a DEN member, confirmed after a meeting with the Russian Trade Representative Office in Jakarta on Thursday (17/4/2025) that the nuclear power plant would be fully funded by Rosatom, ensuring no financial burden on Indonesia’s state or regional budgets.
"The development of this NPP is 100% funded by Rosatom, and it will not burden the state budget or regional budgets," he said, as quoted by antaranews.com
Rosatom, one of the world's largest nuclear companies, will provide a low-emission, cost-effective energy source, aligning with Indonesia’s clean energy goals. Southeast Sulawesi is deemed ideal for the NPP due to its geological stability, as confirmed by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). The region also faces significant electricity demand due to large nickel processing industries.
The nuclear power plant is expected to help address power shortages in households and small industries in the area.
