Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Indonesian Medical Association (IDI) confirmed that Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) causes mild symptoms similar to the common flu, emphasizing there is no need to panic but urging continued vigilance.
Dr. Erlina Burhan, the Chair of IDI’s COVID-19 Task Force, explained during a virtual press conference on Wednesday (8/1/2025) that HMPV is an acute respiratory virus first identified in 2001. Its symptoms, including cough and runny nose, typically appear after a 3-6 day incubation period and last around five days.
“HMPV often goes undetected because it resembles the flu and rarely causes severe illness,” she said, as reported by antaranews.com.
Transmission occurs via droplets, but healthy immune systems can typically combat the virus. While cases in Indonesia mainly affect children, symptoms remain mild.
Dr. Erlina advised maintaining hygiene, avoiding close contact with sick people, and wearing masks in crowded areas, especially for high-risk groups.
“HMPV resolves with rest and supportive care like fever reducers,” she concluded.
