Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Three Greenpeace activists and a young Papuan woman have been released by the Grogol Petamburan Police Office after being briefly detained for protesting a nickel mine project in Raja Ampat during the Indonesia Minerals Conference & Expo in West Jakarta on Tuesday.
"There was no criminal offense. They were released yesterday," said Grogol Petamburan Police Chief Senior Inspector Reza Hafiz Gumilang on Wednesday (4/6/2025), as quoted by antaranews.com.
They were initially detained by event organizers who considered the protest disruptive. Police later took them in for questioning to ensure the event proceeded peacefully.
"We did not arrest them. We simply detain them so the event could continue in a safe and orderly manner," Chief Reza explained.
The protest was part of ongoing concerns regarding environmental damage allegedly caused by nickel mining in Raja Ampat, Southwest Papua Province. While only two licensed companies—PT GAG Nickel and PT Kawei Sejahtera Mining—operate in the area, the provincial environmental agency is reviewing reports of potential unlicensed activity that could threaten local ecosystems.
