Inp.polri.go.id - Beijing. State-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) plans to begin expanding its rail network beyond Java in 2026, targeting Sumatra, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi as new growth regions, CEO Bobby Rasyidin said on Wednesday (12/11/2025).

“We must start the expansion by 2026. The President wants it completed within his first term,” he told antaranews in Beijing, where he joined Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi and other officials to meet Chinese stakeholders, including the country’s transport minister.

The expansion will focus on developing new “greenfield” railway projects, entirely new infrastructure built from scratch, including bridges, tunnels, signaling systems, and electrification..

President Prabowo Subianto earlier instructed PT KAI to add 30 new rail points and train sets within a year and accelerate rail development outside Java to support logistics for key commodities such as palm oil, rubber, coffee, tin, and nickel.

PT KAI also plans to modernize networks in Java and extend Sulawesi’s existing 83 km track to North Sulawesi.
