Some Indonesian victims of human trafficking in Myawaddy, Myanmar, have refused repatriation because they are profiting from their work as online gambling operators, according to Indonesian National Police (INP) Head of International Relations Division Insector. "Some Indonesians remain in Myanmar and refuse to return because they are making money despite being victims," he said, as quoted by antaranews.com.
Chief Krishna revealed that approximately 6,000 Indonesians are involved in online scam operations in Myanmar, many as perpetrators. Some victims, after being repatriated, even returned to Myanmar to continue working.
“One of them admitted earning Rp 500 million from a single online scam victim in Indonesia,” he said.
Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Budi Gunawan has ordered law enforcement to crack down on international human trafficking syndicates amid efforts to rescue 554 exploited Indonesians from Myawaddy.
