Inp.polri.go.id - Timika. Two climbers died from hypothermia while descending Carstensz Pyramid, Central Papua, Mimika Sub-regional Police Chief Superintendent Billyandha Hildiario Budiman confirmed Sunday (2/3/2025).
"Two female hikers from Jakarta and Bandung, based on their ID addresses, died from hypothermia," he said, as quoted by antaranews.com.
Elsa Laksono succumbed to suspected acute mountain sickness (AMS) while descending and was evacuated to Mimika Regional Hospital. Lilie Wijayanti Poegiono was found unresponsive at Teras Duaon Saturday.
Meanwhile, the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) confirmed 13 other climbers were rescued, including musician Fiersa Besari and three foreign climbers from Turkey and Russia.
The team reported in distress at 12.46 am Sunday, as some of them faced AMS symptoms near the Tyrolean traverse section.
Both victims’ remains are scheduled to be flown to Jakarta on Monday.
