Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta.  On Wednesday (3/4/2024), an official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the repatriation of 169 Indonesian children from Taiwan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), following reports of their abandonment in orphanages. Collaborating with relevant ministries, this action aimed to ensure the children's well-being based on findings by Indonesian diplomatic missions.
Judha Nugraha, the Director of Protection for Indonesian Citizens and Legal Entities of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighted that many of these children were born to migrant workers out of wedlock. Operating under Law Number 12 of 2006 on Citizenship, the Ministry facilitated their return due to one parent's Indonesian citizenship, he said. Efforts, in partnership with the Ministry of Social Affairs, focused on locating and reuniting the children with maternal families, prioritizing cases with clear family connections, Judha said. He urged migrant workers to carefully consider legal and social implications before starting families abroad. Compliance with host country regulations is crucial to prevent hardships for undocumented children left abroad.
