5.4 Magnitude Quake in Mamberamo, No Tsunami Risk

Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta.  The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a 5.3 magnitude tectonic earthquake striking the Mamberamo Raya Regency, Papua, at 7.19 am  on Thursday (21/3/2024). Daryono, the Head of BMKG's Earthquake and Tsunami Center, said that their earthquake modeling analysis concluded the quake in Mamberamo Raya posed no tsunami risk. The latest BMKG data places the earthquake's coordinates at 1.83 degrees South latitude, 137.50 degrees East longitude, with a depth of 10 kilometers, as reported by antaranews.com The epicenter lies at sea, 50 kilometers northwest of Benuki, Mamberamo Raya. Daryono said the earthquake's mechanism as strike-slip, triggered by activity along the Yapen Fault. The quake registered V MMI intensity, with tremors felt by almost all residents, leading many to wake up in areas such as Sawai, Benuki, Memberamo Hilir, Kota Burmeo, and Botawa. Sarmi, Serui, and Mulia experienced II-II and IV MMI intensities. As of now, BMKG has not received reports of any earthquake-related damage from local communities or relevant agencies in the area.
