Inp.polri.go.id - Bengkulu. A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck 43 km southwest of Bengkulu City, Indonesia, at 2.52 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km on Friday morning (23/5/2025), the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported.

BMKG confirmed no tsunami threat and no reports of structural damage or casualties. Strong tremors were felt in Bengkulu, Empat Lawang, and weaker ones in surrounding areas including Kepahiang, Mukomuko, Rejang Lebong, and Lubuk Linggau.

BMKG geophysicist Sabar Ardiansyah said aftershocks may occur but are expected to be of lower magnitude, according to antaranews.com.

Authorities advised residents to rely on official updates and remain prepared for evacuation if necessary.

Bengkulu frequently experiences seismic activity. From January to mid-August 2024, BMKG recorded 746 earthquakes in the region, the strongest reaching magnitude 6.3 in Enggano Island. No significant infrastructure damage was reported in Friday’s quake.
