Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. In the early hours of Monday morning (4/12/2023), a powerful earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale struck Melonguane sub-district in Talaud Islands regency, North Sulawesi. Despite the intensity, there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, bringing a relief to the affected region. The quake, which struck at 2:48 am, had an epicentre some 960 km from Melonguane sub-district at a depth of 132 km. The coordinates recorded were 12.61 degrees north latitude and 127.40 degrees east longitude, according to the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). The BMKG has urged residents in the affected areas to remain vigilant for possible aftershocks. The epicentre of the earthquake lies within the Circum-Pacific Belt, commonly known as the Ring of Fire, where several tectonic plates converge, resulting in frequent volcanic and seismic activity. The Talaud Islands in particular have experienced recurrent seismic events. In particular, on 22 January 2022, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck the southeastern region of Melonguane at 9:26 am, underscoring the area's seismic vulnerability. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely for any developments. (ar/inp/pr/nm)
