Inp.polri.go.id - Banda Aceh. Communities in Bireuen and Aceh Utara regencies in Aceh, vehemently rejected the arrival of Rohingya immigrants for the second time on Thursday (16/11/2023), pushing their wooden boats back into the sea.
Miftach Tjut Ade, Panglima Laot Aceh who represents the official maritime customary institution that oversees Aceh's fishermen, said that around 249 Rohingya immigrants arrived on wooden boats and were met with rejection by local communities, antaranews.com reported.
The first incident occurred at 04:00 am when the migrant boat landed in Kuala Pawon, Bireuen, and was immediately rejected. Later in the day, the refugees reached Ulee Madon, Muara Batu, Aceh Utara at around 4 pm. Despite receiving food and clothing supplies from the locals, they were eventually turned back out to sea.
According to Miftach, the local administrations were unable to accept the migrants due to a lack of responsibility, leading to the community's rejection. He urged the central government to take full responsibility, stressing that the issue should not be left to the Aceh administration alone.
He expressed concern over the continued influx of Rohingya refugees into Aceh, stressing the need for immediate central government intervention as the region struggles to cope. Despite local efforts, he said, the central government has not adequately addressed the situation.
Over the past three days, Aceh has seen hundreds of Rohingya refugees arrive on its shores. On Tuesda, 200 refugees landed in Blang Raya, Pidie, with six escaping. On Wednesday, 147 Rohingya migrants arrived in Beurandeh, Batee, Pidie.
