inp.polri.go.id - Medan. A debt collector suspected of attempting to seize a motorcycle belonging to an online motorcycle taxi driver in Medan City, North Sumatra, led to a police investigation.

The weapon that initially caused panic among residents turned out not to be a real firearm, but a toy pistol.

Medan Baru Sector Police Criminal Investigation Unit Head, First Police Inspector Fandi Setiawan, stated that the debt collector, identified as SS (36), was indeed carrying the toy pistol. Investigation revealed that SS usually carries it as a precautionary measure.

According to Fandi, SS pulled out the toy pistol when the situation was dire. During the incident, SS was beaten and his motorcycle was damaged by residents.

Although the pistol was not a real firearm, police still detained SS. Officers found a knife on his motorcycle.

SS was then charged under the Emergency Law for possession of sharp weapons.
"We're enforcing the Emergency Law. A knife was found on his motorcycle," said Fandi.

Meanwhile, the issue between the motorcycle taxi driver and the debt collector regarding the vehicle's repossession will be resolved independently by both parties.

The incident occurred on Wahid Hasyim Road, Medan, on Tuesday (9/1/2026). At the time, a motorcycle taxi driver with the initials R was passing by while waiting for a ride.

As he was approaching the red light at Gajah Mada Road, R was approached by a motorist who claimed his motorcycle was having problems. The motorist then asked R for help pushing his motorcycle.

R, intending to help, stopped and pushed the motorcycle. However, it was later discovered that the motorist was suspected of being a debt collector trying to take R's motorcycle.

The incident then sparked a commotion, which led to the arrival of the other people. SS was briefly the target of the angry mob before being apprehended.
