Inp.polri.go.id – Papua. Papua Regional Police along with Yahukimo Regional Government announced emergency status since last week for Amuma District.
It was not without reason that this announcement was made as 24 people have died due to food crisis. Furthermore, there are more than 12,000 people in dozens of villages at Amuma District who lost their food source due to climate change.
“From what we have gathered in Amuma District, there are 24 people who died because of the food crisis,” says Papua Police Public Relations Chief, Grand Commissioner Ignatius Benny Ady Prabowo on Wednesday (10/25/2023).
He explains that the extreme weather in Amuma District have been occurred since August 2023, causing fields and livestock to die.
Accroding to him, there are 13 villages in Amuma District that is in the worst state of food crisis. The situation got worse as the route for aid is also difficult.
“The only access to that area is only by helicopter, which we are now doing,” says the police.
Responding to the crisis, Papua Regional Police along with Regional Government and Telematika East Palapa Inc. have sent four aids. Moreover, teams also deployed to the 13 villages to monitor the situation at the field.
Indonesian VP, Ma’ruf Amin have also ordered to send aids to overcome the stark issues in Amuma District. He also states other than overcoming the current issue, government have also prepared long term plan to overcome food sustainability issues in Yahukimo.
Central Government will prepare food storage for people affected by hunger. Apart from that, the government will also develop food crop planting scenarios that are suitable in the area for all seasons.
