ASEAN-Canada Stepped Foot in Trade and Renewable Strategic Partnership

ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC) with Canada-ASEAN Business Council (CABC) host the Roundtable ASEAN-Canada trade meeting in Sultan Hotel, Jakarta, Tuesday (9/5/2023). Chair of ASEAN-BAC Arsjad Rasjid, Wednesday (9/6/2023) stated that the roundtable meeting aimed to develop the partnership in private sector in facing important issues. This also include the discussion for Net Zero and ensuring continuous supply resilience. The theme of ASEAN-Canada roundtable is “Strengthening ASEAN-Canada Opportunities for Continuous Development”. “The summit focused on how ASEAN state members and Canada could expand their trade opportunities, pushing cooperation for clean energy, and facilitating trade flows and investment through Canada to accelerate ASEAN role for continuous global growth,” said Arsjad in his opening remarks during the roundtable meeting. He then expressed his gratitude for Premier Canada Justin Trudeau for the attention given to ASEAN. However, he stressed the necessity of concrete plan in further enhancing cooperation in Southeast Asia. “During the G20 Summit in Bali, Trudeau conveyed a significant step of Canada on ASEAN continuous development through Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) with Indonesia and Vietnam,” add Arsjad. The strategic partnership between the two have resulted huge investment from Canada in helping Indonesia and Vietnam to transition from coal to renewable energy sources. Meanwhile, CABN President Wayne Farmer revealed significant progress that had been achieved by ASEAN and Canada just recently, specifically with the reaffirmation of economic commitment pushed by new Indo-Pacific Strategy (IPS). “CABC representing Canada and ASEAN states support Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and evaluate existing deals and plans. Canada is the fore-front in farm, technology investment, and renewable energy sectors. This cooperation aimed to help ASEAN states in achieving continuous development and transition to renewable energy,” said CABC President.
