The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) in Banda Aceh has initiated a rescue operation to evacuate approximately 100 Rohingya immigrants following the sinking of their vessel in the waters off West Aceh Regency. "We're deploying KN Kresna 232 for the rescue operation," said Ibnu Harris Al Hussain, the Head of Basarnas Banda Aceh, on Wednesday (20/3/2024). Fishermen reported the sinking of a Rohingya immigrant ship at sea, around 16 nautical miles from Suak Ulee Beach, West Aceh Regency, approximately at 10 am local time, according to antaranews.com. Mimi Al Nur, the Acting Sub-district Head of Samatiga, disclosed that the Rohingya immigrants were on a voyage bound for Australia. "During their journey, the vessel capsized. Six Rohingya immigrants were rescued by local fishermen, while others are still awaiting assistance at sea," she said.
