Inp.polri.go.id - Pekanbaru. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Pekanbaru Station has detected 46 hotspots across Riau Province, with Indragiri Hilir Regency emerging as the most affected area with 20 points.

While Riau is on high alert, the broader Sumatra region is facing a significant surge in fire activity, with a total of 433 hotspots identified, the majority of which are concentrated in Aceh.

"Weather conditions in Riau remain predominantly clear to cloudy, with only localized light rain, which keeps the potential for fires high," said BMKG forecaster Yasir P on Wednesday (28/1/2026), as cited by antaranews.com.

The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Riau confirmed that while several fires broke out over the past week in Kampar, Bengkalis, and Pekanbaru, most have been extinguished.

However, intensive "cooling down" operations are underway in Bengkalis and Kepulauan Meranti to prevent reignition. The Riau Regional Police and BPBD are maintaining strict coordination to monitor these hotspots and ensure that any illegal land clearing or accidental fires are addressed before they escalate into larger-scale haze events.
