Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta.  The  National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) announced on Friday (9/2/2024) that five people have been found dead due to flooding and landslides in the Sugapa District of Intan Jaya Regency, Papua.
"Five people have tragically lost their lives, and one person has sustained serious injuries," saod Abdul Muhari, the Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center in Jakarta. The rugged terrain and adverse weather conditions have significantly hampered emergency response operations by the joint task force composed of personnel from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), local police, and military district command in Intan Jaya. Despite the challenges, the BNPB assured that the joint task force continues to work to evacuate affected victims, utilizing equipment and resources with support from local church leaders and community members, antaranews.com reported. Earlier, the Regent of Intan Jaya declared a state of emergency for landslides and flash floods in the area. The state of emergency will remain in effect for 14 days, from 7 to 14 February 7 2024. Besides claiming lives, the landslides, with debris exceeding three meters from the hills, have also blocked roads and damaged agricultural areas in several villages in the Sugapa District, including Yoparu Bulagi, Yoparu Galunggama, Yoparu Ngamagae, Wandoga, Yokatapa, Kumbalagupa, Bilogai, Puyagia Baitapa, and Zambili.
