inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) urged local governments to evaluate their early warning systems for potential disasters and community preparedness, after the tsunami warning for the impact of the earthquake in Russia on Indonesian territory was declared over.

The Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, stated that local governments can review the effectiveness of evacuation routes, facilities at evacuation sites, equipment readiness, and logistics.

"Furthermore, preparedness training also needs to be conducted regularly to minimize the risk of damage and loss of life due to disasters," said Abdul, Head of the Center, Thursday (7/31/2025).

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued a tsunami early warning for Indonesia following the 8.7-magnitude earthquake in Kamchatka, Russia, on Wednesday morning (July 30). The BMKG officially declared the tsunami early warning to be over on the same day at 11:00 p.m.

Based on information gathered by the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), nine areas were affected by minor tsunami waves, which did not cause any damage or casualties.

These nine areas include two each in Jayapura and West Papua, and one each in Central Halmahera, Papua, North Sulawesi, North Maluku, and Gorontalo.

In Gorontalo Province, 100 people sought refuge at the local Indonesian Navy base. In other areas, residents independently evacuated to safer homes of relatives.

BNPB reminds local governments and communities in coastal areas to remain vigilant for potential earthquakes and tsunamis, which can occur at any time. Strengthening early warning systems is considered crucial to provide sufficient evacuation time and minimize disaster risks.
