Inp.polri.go.id - Rio de Janeiro. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Arrmanatha Christiawan Nasir clarified on Monday (7/7/2025) that the BRICS summit is not aimed at opposing the United States or any other country, following a statement by U.S. President Donald Trump threatening 10% tariffs on nations supporting BRICS.

“The President’s meetings have never been intended to go against the U.S. or anyone else,” he said

Deputy Minister Armanatha emphasized that the primary objective of BRICS is to enhance cooperation among developing nations in addressing global challenges, rather than forming a geopolitical bloc to counter major powers.

“No discussions in the forum were directed against any country. The topics included climate change, global health, multilateralism, and cooperation,” he added.

Meanwhile, Cabinet Secretary Lieutenant Colonoel Teddy Indra Wijaya said that Indonesia’s participation in the 17th BRICS Summit marks a historic milestone in the country’s global diplomacy.

“For the first time, Indonesia officially joins BRICS as a full member. This is a major initiative by President Prabowo Subianto,” he said at Galeão Air Base, Rio de Janeiro, before heading to Brasília.

Indonesia became the 10th full member of BRICS, joining Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE. Saudi Arabia is in the accession process.

Earlier, President Trump warned on Truth Social that any country supporting the "anti-American agenda" of BRICS would face additional trade tariffs of 10 percent with no exceptions.
