inp.polri.go.id - Batam. The Riau Islands Regional Police, along with the United States (US) Embassy in Jakarta, are strengthening coordination in handling human trafficking, online fraud, and transnational crime.
This was conveyed by Riau Islands Regional Police Chief Inspector General Suhendri during a visit by representatives from the US Embassy at the Riau Islands Regional Police Headquarters, Batam, on Tuesday (10/20/2026).
Chief Suhendri explained that a number of Indonesian citizens involved in online fraud abroad were essentially victims of human trafficking. They were initially promised high-paying jobs but instead experienced exploitation.
Throughout 2026, the Riau Islands Police handled 36 human trafficking cases with 64 suspects and successfully rescued 143 victims, consisting of 96 men and 47 women.
Furthermore, the ways the illegal migrant workers departed have changed, exploiting tourist routes as a means of departure. A total of 49 victims have been successfully repatriated from their destination countries.
"The Riau Islands region, which borders many countries, is vulnerable to human trafficking and other transnational crimes, including cross-border drug smuggling," said Suhendri.
During the meeting, Vice Chief of the Riau Islands Police, Brigadier General Anom Wibowo, emphasized the importance of prevention through cross-agency coordination and public education to ensure they understand the legal procedures for working abroad.
He urged the public to be wary of job offers promising high salaries without clear procedures and to ensure the legality of recruitment agencies and complete documentation before departure.
Anom also urged the public to immediately report any indication of human trafficking or illegal recruitment of migrant workers to the 110 Police Hotline, which is active 24/7.
