inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is developing artificial intelligence (AI) technology to boost the strategic national defense industry.

BRIN Head, Tri Handoko, emphasized the importance of utilizing AI in supporting the national defense sector.

"We are developing cheaper (technology) to improve its performance through the use of AI technology. For example, for telecommunications, mapping, photography, (and) there are many things we can do with AI," said Handoko on Monday (4/21/2025).

Handoko explained that his party is currently developing various AI technologies for various needs, including mapping and surveillance systems, as well as unmanned aviation technology (drones) of various sizes.

He also mentioned that the telecommunications sector now relies heavily on AI, including in terms of security.

"Flights are for unmanned aircraft or drones of various sizes from small to large, then there is also telecommunications," he explained.

Not only AI, BRIN is also focused on developing new material technology such as composites to support drone performance, with lighter composite materials. Thus, the carrying capacity can be increased without sacrificing structural strength.

On the same occasion, Vice Minister of Defense Donny Ermawan Taufanto expressed his full support for BRIN's efforts to bring together researchers, industry, and users in one collaborative forum.

Donny also highlighted the importance of AI technology and electronics as two main areas needed by the defense industry today.

"From us, the defense industry that is currently needed is related to artificial intelligence, which we really need, because the current progress in the international world is very fast. Then, the supporting field is also electronics, which is really needed," he said.
