Inp.polri.go.id - Tangerang. The Directorate General of Immigration confirmed on Friday (24/4/2026) that a British man identified as DJR (53) died by suicide while in custody at the Depok Immigration Office in West Java.
The deceased was discovered unconscious in the detention room's bathroom on Tuesday, just two days after being detained for residency permit violations.
"We have investigated and an autopsy has been performed; it was a pure suicide," said Director General of Immigration Hendarsam Marantoko in Tangerang, as quoted by antaranews.com.
He suggested that the deceased may have suffered from depression, noting that the incident occurred while officials were in the process of arranging his release from the detention facility.
Immigration authorities have coordinated with the victim's family, who reside in Indonesia, regarding the handling of the body. Discussions are ongoing to determine whether the remains will be buried locally or repatriated to the United Kingdom.
