Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Minister of Defense Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin met with high-ranking retired military officers in Jakarta on Friday (24/4/2026), to discuss a Letter of Intent (LoI) from the United States regarding airspace overflight access.

The meeting involved former Indonesian Military (TNI) commanders and chiefs of staff who provided strategic analysis on the proposal's impact on national defense.

"The veterans have very good considerations and analysis, which will later be discussed with relevant ministries, agencies, and the House of Representatives," said Brigadier General Rico Ricardo Sirait, the Head of the Defense Information Bureau, as reported by antaranews.com.

He said that the government maintains full control over sovereign airspace and can reject any activities that do not benefit national interests.

Addressing rumors of a final agreement granting the US full flight freedom, Chief Rico clarified that the document remains a draft and is not legally binding. The proposed LoI reportedly covers emergency operations, crisis management, and joint training exercises, but officials stressed that national sovereignty remains the top priority in ongoing evaluations.
