Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Ministry of Law and Human Rights announced on Tuesday (21/11/2023) that dual citizens, especially adolescents, can still apply for naturalisation until 31 May 2024, with only six months left. Baroto, the Director of State Affairs at the General Directorate of Legal Administration at the Ministry, explained that this timeframe is stipulated inGovernment Regulation (PP) No. 21 of 2022, which regulates the procedures for obtaining, losing, cancelling and reacquiring Indonesian citizenship. "Considering that this regulation will expire on 31 May 2024, we hope that parents involved in mixed marriages will register the citizenship of their children to ensure that they receive protection and legal certainty as Indonesian citizens," he was quoted by antaranews.com as saying. Baroto urged parents in mixed marriages with children as young as 18, when Law No. 12 of 2006 on Indonesian Citizenship was enacted, to register immediately to obtain Indonesian citizenship status. Currently, the adolescence who apply for registration are required to pay a non-tax fee of Rp5 million. However, if the deadline expires, those seeking Indonesian citizenship through pure naturalisztion in accordance with the law will be charged a fee of Rp50 million. "If dual citizens register through the pure naturalization route, the cost is considerable, which is Rp 50 million," Baroto explained. He asserted that this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and that six months was not a long time, urged the parents of dual citizen children not to miss this opportunity. (mg/inp/pr/nm)
