Earthquake Hits Ternate, Triggered by Maluku Sea Plate Activity

Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that a 5.4 magnitude earthquake shook the northern coast of Batang Dua Island, Ternate, North Maluku, on Wednesday morning ( due to shallow rock deformation on the Maluku Sea plate.

"This is a shallow earthquake with a thrust fault mechanism," said Daryono, the Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, in Jakarta.

He confirmed that the earthquake did not trigger a tsunami.

The BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center reported a 5.6 magnitude earthquake in North Maluku and North Sulawesi at 6:39 AM WIB. The quake's epicenter was located in the sea at coordinates 1.30° N and 126.11° E, 110 kilometers southeast of Bitung, North Sulawesi, at a depth of 12 kilometers.

In addition to Ternate, the tremors were felt in Manado, Minahasa, North Minahasa, South Bolaang Mongondow, Bitung, Tomohon, Sitaro, and East Bolaang Mongondow, with an intensity scale of III MMI.

As of Wednesday morning, no damage reports have been received.
