Earthquake Victims of Bawean Island Requires Immediate Mental Support

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) considers psychological assistance to be the urgent commodities for the people in healing the trauma following the earthquake in Bawean Island, Gresik, East Java. Head of Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center Abdul Muhari, said that most of the people who evacuated to the refugee camp are experiencing trauma. According to the data from Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of East Java, there are 17,644 victims of Bawean Island Earthquake, of which 6,277 of them are children, 2,534 of them are elderly, and the others are adults. “Based on our assessment, most of them evacuated not because their houses were damaged or destroyed, but because of the aftershock notice,” said Abdus. The record from The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) showed there were 149 aftershocks from Friday (3/22/2024) to Saturday (3/23/2024) morning. Two of them have the strength of 5.9 and 6.4 magnitude and are centered 36 kilometers west of Bawean Island, and 126 kilometers from Tuban City, East Java. Furthermore, other than aftershock notice, there is also an issue of tsunami sounded by unofficial sources and further worsen the condition of the locals. “Whereas the analysis from BMKG clearly stated that the earthquake do not possess tsunami potential, and the information also immediately conveyed massively to the people,” concluded Abdul.
