Inp.polri.go.id - Surabaya. East Java Regional Police have questioned 17 witnesses in the investigation into the collapse of Al Khoziny Islamic Boarding School in Sidoarjo that killed dozens of students on 29 September 2025.

“We’ve examined around 17 witnesses, and that number may increase. Further questioning will involve those responsible for construction and several technical experts,” said East Java Police Chief Inspector General Nanang Avianto on Wednesday night (8/101/2025), as quoted by antaranews.com.

East Java Police have formed a joint team from the General Crime and Special Crime Directorates to determine whether to elevate the case from inquiry to investigation. Early findings point to negligence in construction and supervision.

Officers are investigating possible violations under Articles 359 and 360 of the Criminal Code for negligence causing death and injury, as well as Articles 46 paragraph 3 and 47 paragraph 2 of Law No. 28/2002 on Building Construction.

“All are equal before the law. Anyone proven negligent will be held accountable,” Chief Nanang said.

The collapse left 171 victims, including 67 fatalities.
